Question:
How is Chaos Theory used today? Do we use it in our everyday lives?
Replies:
I am fairly certain that some aspects of chaos theory come into play
in developing computer models for weather prediction. I am also aware
of some musical composers (that is right!) who are using fractal theory
to develop new compositions with computers. There are a couple of guys
associated with U. of C. doing this, however, their names escape me. I
think the Argentinean composer, Xenakis (not sure of the spelling) also
uses fractals. The idea here is to come up with some sort of sound-bite
or aural fractal and let the computer generate a time developed work from
that fractal. I have heard some of the results. They are less than
melodious. There is nothing like a little soul and a pen when it comes
to composition.

and fractals are used in computer art to make interesting shapes and
landscapes for such things as video games.
