Sounds like a good question for the World Wildlife Fund. You could try writing to them to see if they know.

You can get a good booklet on endangered species by writing to: S. James, Consumer information center - 4A, PO Box 100, Pueblo, CO 81002. The booklet is free for the asking, but there is a $1.00 service fee. Ask for "Why save endangered species?" order number 585A.
