Prospects in Nuclear Engineering

Question:
I am interested in a career in nuclear engineering. However, I am concerned
about the current status of nuclear engineering research. In light of the
nations policy on nuclear power, are there many significant research
opportunities that are on the cutting edge? I am familiar with fusion
research, but I am interested in research that has a more foreseeable
application in society.
Replies:
So you are studying engineering at Purdue. I graduated from Purdue with a
MS and Ph.D. in mechanical engineering. You should make an appointment to
talk with Dr. Incropera, the Mechanical Engineering chairman. He could give
you some more insights into the field. However, he would probably talk you
into studying mechanical engineering, which is the same thing that I am
going to do. As a mechanical engineering major with an interest in nuclear
engineering, you could spend whatever electives that you have available
taking nuclear engineering courses but have the flexibility that a degree in
mechanical engineering gives you. I am not saying that the nuclear engi-
neering degree is inflexible, but when you have it people expect you to be
working in nuclear engineering, whether or not there happen to be jobs in
that area. I my opinion, we (United States citizens and legislator are near
sighted when we fail to support research in nuclear energy. In the end we
will be buying the technology from France. Like I said earlier study
mechanical engineering and pay attention especially to the thermal fluids,
heat transfer and controls topics. Those are the fundamental for any power
plant engineer.
