Is there any new research into galaxy formation. Also how many galaxies do
we know about and what are their formations i.e. spiral...etc.?

There is much research on galaxy formation, and some recent. You should
check out a book to see the differences . The most interesting topics are
galaxies that might have black holes at their center, and the places where
galaxies are not so dense. There is lots here, but look for a book with
complete data.
