Question:
Can you give me any information about the Swift-Tuttle Comet? I
heard that the Earth will be wiped of any life by that comet within 100 years.
Replies:
Swift-Tuttle is a periodic comet that MAY pass close to the earth
on its next sojourn into the inner solar system. Comet orbits are impossible
to predict accurately until they are detected approaching the inner solar
system, because their orbits are strongly influenced by the gas giant planets,
especially Jupiter. However, the probability of a comet actually striking the
earth is extremely small (no comet has struck the earth for at least 65 million
years!)
