Question:
What is a sigmoid growth curve and how does it pertain
to biology?
Replies:
Hello,
Sigmoid curve is a tilted S-shaped curve that resembles trends in the
life-cycle of many living things and phenomena. It is used in all sorts of
contexts, from product development to leadership training to biology. If
you look at the Sigmoid curve (I am unable to sketch it here but you can
look it up in an encyclopedia,) you will see that it has a base
building/introduction phase,followed by a growth phase, then a maturing
phase, and finally a declining phase (look at the letter S with its top
tilted to the right). This is the life-story of flowers, red blood cells,
trees, men, empires, products, etc.
There are a variety of Sigmoid curves but all are S-shaped. This way, we
can use a tall and thin version it to illustrate, for example, products
that has a long growth cycle.
Good Luck,
