Can water and chromium picolinate really help me loose
weight?
Replies:
No. Losing weight is simple mathematics. You eat a certain number
of calories a day, probably about 2000. You burn a certain number of
calories a day, about 1400 just to keep your body temperature at 98.6
F, your blood pumping, etc., and the rest you burn moving around all
day. If you consume more calories than you burn, you gain weight. If
you consume fewer than you burn, you lose weight. And that is all
there is to it. There are only three ways to lose weight: eat less,
dress less warmly (so it takes more calories to keep warm), or
exercise more.
It takes about 3500 calories to make a pound of fat. So to lose 1
pound, you need to burn 3500 more calories than you eat. You can't
cut out the basic calories you need to keep warm, or you will get
sick, so at most, if you don't exercise more, you can eat about 600
calories a day less than you burn, which means you lose about 1 pound
every 6 days.
The most calorie-consuming exercise is running (not jogging), which
burns about 600 calories per hour. So if you add an hour of running a
day without eating more, you can burn 1200 more calories than you eat,
and lose about 1 pound every 3 days. You should not try to lose
weight faster than this, and, anyway, this means 10 pounds a month and
in six months or less, unless you are exceedingly overweight -- in
which case you need to see the doctor first -- you will be as svelte
as you can possibly want to be.
Incidentally, you might try starting the exercise first, and not
worrying much about the diet. Focus on getting fit: that is, on
increasing your endurance, flexibility, and strength (in that order).
If you do this conscientiously, you will probably find that your
weight comes down of its own accord, that you begin to crave healthy
foods (complex carbohydrates, vegetables, fruits, water) quite
naturally, and that your sense of energy and self-satisfaction rise
very quickly. Think about *giving* your body exercise rather than
*denying* it food. Indulge it by investing in good running shoes,
sharp-looking bike clothes, a pool or gym membership, or a dance
class. Start slow so you don't get discouraged, and build up a little
bit each day.
