Thumb vs Finger
Are thumbs fingers?
The answer is yes.
The thumb is actually a special finger that has only two bones. Our other
fingers actually have three bones in them. Some people are born with three
bones in their thumb and this does not usually cause a problem.
The way that the muscles and bones of our thumbs are set up give it special
properties and make it a very useful finger indeed. This allows for a motion
called opposition. Opposition means that the motion of our thumb "opposes" the
the motion of our other fingers.
An easier way to see it is that our thumbs can move against our other fingers,
which is useful in many ways such as holding a spoon when your eating ice
cream, throwing a baseball or brushing you teeth.
Hope this helps, study hard!!!
Stephen A. Sardino Jr.
Thumbs are made of bones just like fingers. The difference between a thumb
and other fingers is that thumbs are what scientists call "oposable." This
means that they can move in many directions and help your hand to grab
things. It would be really hard to pick up a cup with just your fingers and
no thumbs! That thumb is good for helping our fingers pick things up!
