Humans and Earth's Magnetic Field
What effect does the Earth's magnetic field have on humans?
It makes them really jealous ad curious
that birds and whales and insects have built-in compasses in some part of
and we don't.
It also steers solar particle radiation into a trapped ionosphere above the
where it can't slowly strip away our atmosphere or otherwise ruin our
We like that, even if we don't know it.
We are noticing that this trapped radiation, also called the Van Allen
would kill us if we tried to sit around in space stations in nice
But directly, biologically, I haven't heard of anything it does to us.
0.5 Gauss is a very weak field.
If you're not in a vacuum, you have to have specially susceptible substances
to make it do anything.
Occasionally life-forms make inspired efforts to benefit from it,
but they have no reason to suffer at all from something so weak.
Sunlight, for example, is much harder on most everything.
Other than through indirect interactions by compasses and the like, I
don't know of any direct influence of the Earth's magnetic field and
