Question:
I am doing a project on jeans and I was wondering, how is
denim made?
Replies:
Denim is customarily woven with fine white warp threads and somewhat
heavier blue weft threads. The weave structure is twill. In the
traditional denim the blue weft is dyed with indigo, although of course now
denim is often woven/produced in other colors altogether. Currently, some
denim is woven with stretch threads to allow some give in the fabric. I do
not know whether the stretch threads are in warp, weft, or
both. Sometimes, the cloth is woven first and then dyed, or perhaps
overdyed. In this case, the warp threads will not appear white.
