Question:
How does the percentage composition of carbon in steel determine its
properties?
Replies:
The plain carbon steels represent the most important group of engineering materials
known. They represent by far the major percentage of steel production and the
widest diversity of application of any of the engineering materials. These
applications are so diversified that anything like a complete listing, or even a
classification on the basis of application is not feasible. There are at least
2,000 types of carbon steel.
The plain carbon steels also may be classified on the basis of carbon content as
hypoeutectoid or hypereutectoid steels; the hypoeutectoid steels are those in which
the carbon content is below 0.80 percent, and the hypereutectoid steels are those
above this value.
More than 90 percent of all steels are carbon steels. They contain varying amounts
of carbon and not more than 1.65 percent manganese, 0.60 percent silicon, and 0.60
percent copper. Machines, automobile bodies, most structural steel for buildings,
ship hulls, bedsprings, and bobby pins are among products made of carbon steel.
The above was taken from MICROSOFT ENCARTA DVD 2004 and THE MAKING, SHAPING AND
TREATING OF STEEL, 10th Ed. by USS. I hope that this helps.
Sincerely,
Bob Trach
