Question:
I am working with copper and would like to know if there
is anything I can do to make the copper turn green with out the color
wiping off?
Replies:
Pete,
My recollection is that in revolutionary-era times, the common practive was
to suspend copper over vinegar in an enclosed container. Vapor from the
vinegar would corrode the copper, producing the common verdegris color
coating seen, for example, on the Statue of Liberty.
Note that since this is a coating on the surface of the copper, it can be
removed....in fact those in old times would scrape off the coating to mix as
a pigment in paint. If handled carefully, though, the coating should not
easily rub off.
