Are there any trees that reproduce using underground runners similar to that of strawberries?

Replies:
Yes, trees such as quaking aspen: http://www.rook.org/earl/bwca/nature/trees/populustrem.html and other poplars, beech (beech sprouts), etc. can spread underground, forming large clonal patches (populations).
