Question:
Why does the bark of maples develop vertical splits which seem to self heal
in subsequent years?
Replies:
Bark is a dead, corky protective layer that no longer grows as a tree's diameter increases,
so may split or crack in some fashion. Different species will show different patterns
depending on the species, thickness of the bark, age and health of the tree, etc. As
new bark forms the splits may appear to heal.
J. Elliott
As the tree grows, the bark splits and peels.
