Question:
A student in my third grade class in Virginia brought in
a pine cone from California that is 18 inches long. We thought it was
from a Redwood, but our identification book states that a Redwood cone
is only 1 inch long. Can you help us identify the tree by only knowing
seeing the pine cone? There are 110 third graders who are anxoius to
know exactly which type of tree belongs to this pine cone.
Thank
You!

Probably sugar pine, check a picture/i.d. for verification.

Lisa,
Though I don't have a dendrologoy book handy, my suspicion is that it is
from a sugar pine tree. If you consult a good dendrology text for trees in
your area, this should be an easily identification.
