Bullfrog Care
Name: Susan
Location: N/A
Country: N/A
Date: N/A
Question:
My son Noah, 9, has a bullfrog that he acquired from a
catfish pond just outside of Cape Girardeau, MO. He brought it back to
SD after a trip to relatives in Oct., 1999. The frog lives in an
acquarium in Noah's bedroom. We feed him crickets (dozen at a time) 1
to 2 times per week. We change his water weekly (about 1 inch.) He has
a foam pad and a couple smooth big rocks he sits on. We keep the
acquarium light on him during the daytime, for warmth. Two days ago, he
did not eat his crickets in his usual gobble em up fashion. This
evening, we noticed brown spots on his otherwise greenish brown
skin. Noah is wondering if he has "frog pox." His father and I are
wondering if he is sick. What do you recommend? We can't let him go in
the winter. Noah is devoted to keeping him as a pet, so we have a
commitment here. Thank you for any help you might give us.
Replies:
If you feel that the frog is ill, don't hesitate to take him to a
vet. Vets are more versed in medicine that MD's and one reason for that
is they are trained in all potential organisms [at most vet
schools]. Whatever you do, do not try to place the animal into
hybernation at this point.
