Question:
We found an apparently injured pigeon on our doorstop and
have been caring for it. It appears to be improving daily, but we are
concerned about releasing it. We live in Kentucky and are approaching
winter. How will this bird fare on it's own? Do pigeons normally
migrate? Any suggestions you have will be most appreciated.
Replies:
Assuming it is an ordinary rock dove, aka common pigeon, it will survive the
winter just fine, as long as it doesn't get too much shock going from warm
indoors to cold outdoors - acclimate it by keeping it a day or two in a cool
"transition" zone, like an unheated garage, before letting it go outdoors.
