What is the effect of decrease in seratonin to melatonin transfer? Are there any other chemical process variations which could affect perception?

I'm not an expert on the seratonin melatonin transfer, but I know there are many chemical process variations that can affect perception. Popular articles on neurotransmitters can be found in Scientific American Nov. 1993 P. 58 and The Sciences, Sept. 1993, P 27. A more technical article is published in Life Sciences, 1994, V. 54, N. 22, P. 1635 - "Functional Studies of Neurotransmitter Receptors in the Human Brain".
