Question:
Do you believe the Caracol at Chichen Itza was an astronomical
observatory?
Replies:
Interesting question for NEWTON! as it happens, I've been there and
have read about it: Caracol, like many ancient observatories, has features that
line up with certain celestial bodies at the equinoxes and solstices which were
very important to ancient agrarian societies.
The Maya also placed unusual emphasis on the planet Venus and timed certain
rituals by its orbit, although I don't know if it's been demonstrated that
Caracol was used for keeping track of Venus..
